Penguin Facts

Did you know there are 18 species of penguins on earth with many found in Australia and Antarctica. That’s right! Emperor penguins are incredible birds, who make excellent parents even under harsh conditions, practicing cooperative behaviours and showing less territorial tendencies compared to other types of penguin.

Penguins are such clever creatures! A group of them can be called lots of things, depending on what they're doing and where they’re hanging out.

  • COLONY: A bunch of penguins gathered together on land. 
     
  • RAFT: A group of penguins swimming together.
     
  • ROCKERY OR HUDDLE: A penguins nest.
     
  • WADDLE: When a group of penguins are walking together.

The Emperor penguin can dive down to 530m.

Adélies main source of food is krill and small fish.

AFRICAN
The African penguin is the only penguin species found in Africa.
MACARONI

The Macaroni penguin is the loudest penguin species.

CHINSTRAP
Chinstrap penguins eat snow to cool down when they feel too warm.
GENTOO

Gentoo penguins are the fastest of all penguin species - they can swim at speeds of up to 36 km/h. 

MAGELLANIC

A Magellanic penguin makes a braying sound, like a donkey, when looking for a mate.

ROCKHOPPER

Rockhopper penguins are among the smallest of all penguin species. 

KING

The King penguin has the longest breeding cycle of all the penguin species, lasting 14 to 16 months...

GALAPAGOS
Galapagos penguins are the only penguin found north of the equator.
FIORDLAND

Fiordland penguins occasionally grow barnacles on their tails - an indication that they may be at sea for long periods of time.

HUMBOLDT

Humbolt penguins make their home on sandy beaches and rocky coastlines and generally live for between 20 and 25 years.
